Health and safety masterclass at 3M hailed a “great success”

Safety Network Live 1Like-minded professionals enjoyed a day of educational and fun sessions aimed at improving workplace health and safety at 3M’s Safety Network Live.

The science-based technology company hosted around 50 guests for the event, which turned 3M’s interactive online community, Safety Network, into a live event to help share even more of the company’s expertise and knowledge.

On the day there were a number of seminars and workshops for attendees to choose from, allowing them to tailor a personal agenda to best suit their objectives.

These included an interactive workshop on the dangers of musculoskeletal disorders from world champion power-lifter – and 3M health and safety engineer – Darren Kerr and a seminar on how to improve personal protective equipment compliance from 3M technical specialist, George Elliott.

A face fit testing clinic, hosted by 3M technical specialist Alan McArthur, was a particular crowd pleaser. Alan guided the audience through the qualitative and quantitative face fit testing process, while also engaging with the audience in a Q&A.

Additional keynote sessions included a mock trial from international law firm Pinsent Masons, which explored how a workplace injury might be handled in court, along with an extremely interactive session from leading behavioural safety drama company, 2Macs.

“Our session was focused on what can happen to safety when our judgement is clouded by complacency, time and peer pressures,” explained Harry Gallagher, of 2Macs.

“The audience was fantastic – really participative and committed – and the session went extremely well.”

The event was held to mark the one year anniversary of 3M’s Safety Network, a website that enables professionals to access health and safety expertise at the click of a button.

Over the past year users have been able to benefit from the service through accessing communal discussion boards, educational blogs, webinars and exclusive downloadable training materials.

Jenn Raymond, senior marketing executive at 3M, said: “Safety Network Live was a great success and we are delighted with how the day went. We received lots of really positive feedback from attendees, who said they found the event extremely worthwhile.

“Our aim was to turn all the expertise and knowledge from our online platform into a live event. From this, we hoped to encourage even more health and safety professionals to join our 2,500 strong online community of like-minded individuals.”

Jenn added: “We would like to express our gratitude to all the organisations and individuals who held sessions throughout the day, as it would not have been possible without their efforts.

“Although Safety Network Live has come to an end, there is still a wealth of information available on the Safety Network. For those who missed the event, or who would like to come to another, keep your eyes peeled as we hope to do something similar in the future.”
