Health and safety focus for EEF’s new chief operating officer

The manufacturers’ organisation, EEF, has appointed Caroline Gumble to the new position of chief operating officer where she will be responsible for building its business services division.

Ms Gumble’s division provides advice, consultancy and training across all business areas, most notably for health and safety and environment.

Businesses face significant challenges in both of these areas, as well as HR and employment law, productivity employment, apprenticeship and skills training, learning and development and information and research.

EEF’s newly appointed chief operating officer will ensure that the division continues to build advice, support and skills solutions for businesses as they emerge from recession and look for expert support.

Ms Gumble said: “Companies are at the economic sharp end, driving growth, jobs and wealth. Too often important but complicated issues, such as HR and recruitment law, health and safety and up-skilling employees, can be seen as a distraction — especially for companies fighting hard to emerge from recession. But if left untended they can hinder a firm’s ability to flourish.”

EEF’s role, she added, was to provide the expertise so that companies could get on with their ‘day job’, safe in the knowledge that they were protected and compliant.

The manufacturers’ organisation reported that the sector faced a recruitment ‘crunch’, with almost a million replacement workers needed by 2020. However, there are concerns over the quantity and quality of graduates, who are failing to match up to industry needs.
