Globetrotting HSE inspector examines international attitudes to farm safety
An HSE inspector has used her travel fellowship to visit New Zealand and Australia to learn more about the countries’ approaches to farm safety.
Inspector Gillian McLean, who is based in the HSE’s Edinburgh office, successfully applied for a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship. She chose to take the trip to the Southern Hemisphere to assess ways that could help change farmers’ attitudes to safety in the UK.
He travels saw her visit the Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety in Moree (part of the University of Sydney), and The University of Otago, where work has been carried out recently on farmers’ attitudes to risk.
She also attended an international conference on agricultural health and safety, a satellite event of the World Health Organisation’s Safety 2012 World Conference. This provided an opportunity to meet with leading figures in the world of agricultural safety, such as Professor Peter Lundqvist from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and Dr Rupert Tipples from Lincoln University, Christchurch.€
