Managed by Greenstreet Berman Ltd, it was developed in line with the HSE’s strategy to promote greater corporate responsibility and accountability for health and safety, and, in this respect, can aid transparent public reporting and comparison with other industry benchmarks.
CHaSPI can be used internally by businesses to help them manage and track their health and safety performance, and to bring about any necessary improvements over time. It can also help businesses benchmark their performance against others within the same sector, using a recognisable set of indicators.
CHaSPI is also of value to external stakeholders, particularly investors, in helping them assess how well an organisation is managing health and safety risks to employees and members of the public. Research has shown that organisations with good risk management – which includes management of health and safety risks – have lower share-price volatility. Thus, investors can use CHaSPI to gather consistent information about organisations’ health and safety performance and can factor this into their investment decisions to improve accuracy.
CHaSPI can greatly facilitate communication of health and safety performance to boards and directors, getting them more actively involved in health and safety issues. If, for example, an organisation is not performing well on health and safety, it can use its CHaSPI results and benchmarking information to bring this to the directors’ attention, thus raising their awareness of health and safety issues, and focusing their attention on measures necessary to bring about any improvements. CHaSPI can help users develop an effective business case, which demonstrates how good health and safety performance can improve productivity and help maintain a competitive business edge.
For health and safety professionals, CHaSPI can be used to track performance and targets over time, and draw the attention of senior management to health and safety matters in a clear and accessible way. It can also be easily used to demonstrate health and safety performance at training events within organisations, or to other health and safety professionals.
Users of the tool who wish to publish their results anonymously may now do so, thanks to a new facility added earlier this year. Organisations can now withold their name while still disclosing their results and other information – for example, organisation size, sector, and industry type.
The future of CHaSPI – can you help?
The HSE has arranged to conduct a light-touch review of CHaSPI over the coming months, which will look at how the tool is being used, its impact, and how it might be improved. The review will be carried out by Greenstreet Berman Ltd and will consist of an online survey supported by a small number of telephone interviews – the survey can be accessed at www.greenstreet.co.uk/chaspi
Registered CHaSPI users who would like to be involved in this should ensure that their contact details are up to date on the CHaSPI database and then
e-mail [email protected], providing your name, the name of the organisation you work for and your e-mail address. Those who are not registered to CHaSPI can also participate in the review and survey. The HSE anticipates that this review will provide a lot of valuable feedback about CHaSPI, which will demonstrate how it has been used in real-life situations, and the benefits it has brought to organisations and their stakeholders.
The review will also make recommendations to the HSE about the future development of CHaSPI, and what further changes and enhancements are needed to make it more effective and user-friendly. The results of the review will be published on the CHaSPI website (www.chaspi.info-exchange.com) early in 2009.
