Demand for environmental qualifications on the up

Increasing numbers of people working in health and safety are seeking an environmental management qualification, according to NEBOSH.

The examination body said the number of people registering to take one of its environmental management qualifications had more than doubled in the last two years – from 1100 in 2009 to a predicted 2700 this year.

Employers appear increasingly willing to fund their staff in studying for specialist qualifications. Research among recently qualified NEBOSH students showed that nearly three quarters of those taking one of the examination body’s environmental management qualifications have their course and examination fees paid for by their employer.

“Our figures show that more and more people are seeking a specialist qualification to go with their environmental management responsibilities,” said Teresa Budworth, NEBOSH chief executive.

Around two thirds of individuals who take a NEBOSH environmental management qualification are employed in a health and safety role, while most of the rest are environmental specialists. Two-thirds already hold another NEBOSH qualification.
