Clive Johnson announced as new President of educational risk charity IIRSM

Clive Johnson was elected as President of the institute for the next two years at its AGM on earlier this month.

Clive JohnsonClive, a well-known advocate of the risk profession, was previously Group Head of Health, Safety and Security at property firm Landsec and is now Group Head of Health and Safety for Derwent London PLC.

Clive takes the reins from outgoing President, Andy Hawkes.

Clive said: “A key focus for IIRSM, and myself in particular, during the next two years will be promoting the benefits of diverse workplaces. Teams that encourage diversity in gender, ethnicity, background and age are better equipped to encourage innovation and make informed business decisions.

“We’ll be focusing on education to improve mentoring, communication and leadership skills for everyone, which we believe will lead to more productive and happy workplaces.”

Andy Hawkes, Chief Executive of Cardinus Risk Management, and Ruth Denyer, Director of Risk at ITV, were re-elected as Trustees.

Clive Johnson’s career

Landsec (formerly Land Securities) is the UK’s largest listed property company and Clive was responsible for ensuring health, safety & security compliance across the property portfolio. This includes shopping centres, retail parks, leisure, residential and development projects. He joined Derwent London PLC in November 2019.

Clive has been an IIRSM Council Member since December 2015 and was named Deputy President Elect in 2017.

He is passionate about driving health agenda across the industry, giving Health the same billing as Safety.  Emphasizing this, he is a co-founder of the Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG), which he now chairs.  The HCLG is made up of HSE, BOHS, IOSH, IIRSM, Principal Contractors, Unions, CITB and clients among others.

Clive also represents IIRSM as chair of the Managing Risk Well group within CONIAC (the Construction Industry Advisory Committee).

In addition, he sits on SHP’s Women in Health & Safety Committee and speaks regularily at Safety & Health Expo.

SHP named Clive one of the 15 most influential people in health & safety 2017 and in 2018.
