New radar system for reversing vehicles being tested

An ‘automatic braking’ radar system designed to prevent accidents while vehicles are reversing is being tested by highways workers in Essex.

ReversingEurovia Surfacing has joined forces with its supply chain partner Sims Milling to trial the system, which has been developed by Vision Techniques and uses harmless low-energy microwaves that are emitted from a unit mounted at the back of the vehicle.

If an obstruction or hazard is detected than the system automatically activates the braking system.

It was recently trialled on a Eurovia Surfacing site in Essex and is now being deployed on Sims Milling Sweepers operating in Hertfordshire.

“Initial feedback from site has been very positive and the system provides further protection for our site personnel and members of the public,” said Eurovia’s Contracting Regional Director, Neil Huntington.

“We decided to take part in the trial as not only could it improve safety, but it shows we are listening to our teams where near-miss cards have been issued following reversing incidents on site.

“While this system must be used in conjunction with other Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and site-specific risk assessments, it is very clear that the ‘Banksman Auto Braking’ radar system will further help eliminate the potential risk of collisions on our sites,” added Mr Huntington.

Eurovia Surfacing has awarded Sims Milling a Gold Card to recognise and reinforce excellence for this initiative which will only help further improve the high levels of safety performance on our sites.
