New AI project to tackle workplace safety risks

Two leading firms – Cisco and Cortexica Vision Systems – are to join forces to develop an artificial intelligence system, which will help prevent safety risks in the workplace.

The two companies have announced they are to work together on the trial project, which will be funded by the government agency Innovate UK, to reduce human error and improve productivity.

The AI-SAFE (Autonomous Intelligent System for Assuring Safe working Environments) initiative will use video cameras mounted above workplace entrances and exits and artificial intelligence software to judge whether the correct headgear, eyewear and footwear equipment is being worn, as well as warn of any risks with contamination.

Non-compliant

If non-compliant equipment is detected, the system will be able to alert, advise or even restrict access to the working environment

Cisco will provide the real-time video analysis for the project, while Cortexica will develop advanced algorithms and machine learning.

“In any environment with increased risk, safety becomes paramount, whether physical or virtual,” said Cisco Europe’s director of innovation, Nick Chrissos.

Productivity

“The application of digital technologies and applied artificial intelligence has the potential to impact the welfare and productivity of workers across many industries, whether in laboratories, construction or for critical infrastructure providers.

“We are thrilled that the UK government is funding this exciting project through Innovate UK,” he added. “With Cortexica we can solve real challenges facing businesses in the UK.”

Cortexica’s senior business development director, SP Johnston, added: “AI-SAFE brings together an IT powerhouse with a pioneering disrupter to provide a targeted solution to solve real-world problems.”
