NEBOSH launches International Diploma in Environmental Management

Health and safety awarding body NEBOSH has launched a new qualification to support international professionals to develop effective environmental management systems in their organisations.

Offered from summer 2017, the International Diploma in Environmental Management aims to equip students with practical skills and best practice, which can be applied to real-life situations.

It has been developed in response to demand from employers, course providers and candidates, as more than half of the current students taking NEBOSH’s UK-centric Diploma in Environmental Management are based outside of the UK.

Environmental management

The syllabus covers environmental management principles, multilateral treaties relating to environmental management, and ways to prevent and control pollution.

It includes the benefits, limitations and structure of an environmental management system, environmental aspect identification and control, plus the principles and drivers for environmental sustainability.

The qualification has a flexible modular approach, so students can fit it around other work and personal commitments.

Avoiding prosecution

Qualified staff will be equipped to help their employers avoid prosecution, litigation and loss of reputation and will be able to help instil environmental ethics and best practice into the workplace.

Additionally, it can help them to achieve recognised management standards, such as ISO 14001.

Matthew Powell-Howard, qualification development manager at NEBOSH, said: “We recognise it’s important, in this increasingly globalised environment, to develop a qualification which supports international organisations, and equips their employees with the practical skills and best practice they need, to work anywhere in the world.”

Qualification standards

Those who pass the International Diploma in Environmental Management will achieve a globally respected, degree-level qualification with all graduates eligible to use the letters IEnvDipNEBOSH after their name.

Successful students will also fulfil the requirements for Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) Practitioner level membership (PIEMA). As the worldwide alliance of environment and sustainability professionals, this IEMA membership will give practitioners access to the practical support they need to deliver on their sustainability goals.

Courses for the International Diploma in Environmental Management will be offered from September 2017.
