Upcoming lecture – Health and safety regulation: ‘red tape’ or ‘thin blue line’
The University of Reading is hosting a lecture on the different views of health and safety, taking place tomorrow evening (Wednesday 4 December).
In his lecture, Professor Paul Almond, the principal investigator in a study examining the public’s attitude towards health and safety, will be discussing the profile of health and safety regulation.
The free-to-attend lecture will look at the different profiles of health and safety with newspapers printing stories of ‘health and safety gone mad’ and politicians arguing for ‘red tape’ to be cut, while at the same time the public has growing concerns over policing risks to health and wellbeing, and ensuring accountability when things go wrong.
Professor Almond will ask why these two very different views of health and safety co-exist, and which version we should believe in.
This lecture comes as part of the University of Reading’s public lecture series, a showcase of some of the research topics carried out at the university. All the lectures are given by an eminent researcher in their field.
The University of Reading — in partnership with the University of Portsmouth and funded by IOSH — is currently examining the public’s attitude towards health and safety.
The study, which examines the social standing and perceived value of health and safety regulation over the last 50 years, is being run with Professor Almond as the principal investigator.
