Schal appointed to give CDM training to HSE inspectors
The HSE has appointed professional management company Schal to provide its inspectors with a better understanding about the role of CDM co-ordinators.
Schal’s specialist Construction Design Management Coordination (CDM-C) team will train inspectors in the HSE’s construction division on how the CDM co-ordinator role is delivered. The aim is to broaden inspectors’ understanding of the application of CDM regulations when dealing with duty holders.
Schal, which is the management arm of TPS (part of Carillion plc), has previously worked with the HSE by assisting in the production of guidance and information published by the Executive for the CDM Duty Holders.
Schal CDM-C services manager, Andrew Hughes, said: “This inclusive approach by the HSE should really re-energise the CDM Regulations as well as the wider approach to health and safety management on construction sites. We look forward to helping the HSE work towards its zero accident target.”

Competency is key – associations respond to UK building plan
Does this mean that the HSE has not been enforcing the Regs correctly since 1994 ?
With a report of more traffic wardens in Westminster than HSE field inspectors in the whole UK surely paying consultants is just another waste of taxpayers money
They must have “in-house” experts left, they had them when I worked there !!!
There are a lot of CDMCs that could do with this training themselves, I have worked in construction for a number of years & have only had one CDMC contact our company to discuss design implications & buildability.
one CDMC on well over 300 MCG/UKCG contracts providing the right information at the right time, something is wrong & it isn’t HSE inspectors understading of the role of a CDMC
So we are now witnessing the demise of the Health and Safety Executive.
They have been enforcing the CDM regulations since 1994 and at least they are going to receive training.
Why not hand the whole lot over to consultants and be done with it ?
