New campaign to avoid roadworks accidents

The DVD, which includes a short film called ‘Respect’, depicts the dangers that road workers face by vehicles driven irresponsibly. Between 2003 and 2007, 10 road-workers were killed and 81 seriously injured while working on motorways and major A-roads across England.

The film shows a car crashing through a busy classroom, and into an operating theatre during surgery, and finally into a coned-off area of road colliding with a workman.

In addition to the DVD the Highways Agency has invested £160,000 on two hi-tech mobile training vehicles, which will allow other employers to keep staff up to date with the latest health and safety and working practices.

Highways Agency chief executive, Graham Dalton, said: “Road-workers are out there doing a job to make journeys better for road-users. They work close to traffic every day and deserve our respect for doing so. Our new toolkit is about encouraging drivers to use appropriate behaviour while driving through roadworks, to respect those working there and to help the construction and maintenance industry do as much as it can for them, too.”
