Guidance – scaffolding- A fitting change
According to the NASC, TG20:08 – A guide to good practice for scaffolding with tubes and fittings will become the required standard by which tube-and-fitting scaffolding should be erected and designed. It details how such scaffolding can be erected to comply with the European standard BS EN 12811-1, which supersedes BS 5973.The principles of the latter standard herald few changes for scaffolders in terms of their day-to-day operations, but the main ones are:
- the processes of justifying the design will alter, rather than the scaffold;
- façade/sway bracing is fitted every six bays;
- there are more tie arrangements and alternatives, for greater flexibility; and the arrangements for some sheeted scaffolds are more varied.
The guidance comes in two volumes: one for everyday use by scaffolding contractors, and the second for specific use by designers. Priced at £135 (for both volumes), plus £6 p&p, the guidance can be ordered at www.nasc.org.uk
