Guidance – Crowd safety- Gunning for good practice in crowd management

Designing for crowds – an integrated approach has been developed, says the organisation, to focus attention on the design and management of venues to ensure that users are safe and comfortable, and can move without risk or difficulty. A group of experts in the field has carried out research on an integrated design process, in which designers take full account of operational issues during the design process, rather than owners/operators having to take operational issues forward late in the day – which may require changes to what has already been constructed. The resulting guide can be used by those designing new buildings and systems; upgrading or changing existing facilities; or managing places such as retail centres, religious and sporting venues, theatres and concert halls, and transport hubs, such as railway stations or airports. The guidance will be launched on 18 June at the Emirates Stadium, home to Arsenal Football Club in north London. There will be a tour of the ‘unseen’ stadium, accompanied by talks from public-safety specialists, and experts from the Metropolitan Police. To find out more, or to book a place at the launch event, which costs £10, please contact CIRIA on 020 7549 3300.
