Free information – Chemicals identification made simple
A website has been launched to help users of chemicals in workplace and domestic settings understand the hazards associated with the substances with which they come into contact.
The Chemical Hazards Communication Society (CHCS) devised the site to address the lack of awareness and understanding of new chemical labelling pictograms. www.understandthelabel.org.uk provides simple explanations for the pictograms, together with some basic advice on safe handling.
The familiar chemical-warning labels on many products commonly used in households and workplaces are changing, as part of the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation (CLP) came into force in the EU in 2009 and its provisions are being phased in up to 2015.
Substances had to be classified, labelled and packaged in accordance with the regulations by 1 December 2010 but those already on the shelves on that date can continue to be supplied until 1 December this year.
Speaking about the new regulations, CHCS chair Stuart Longworth said: “They will make life easier for consumers when they travel and businesses when they import and export products, because there will eventually only be one set of symbols to deal with throughout most of the world.”
