Fire-safety responsibilities explained

General awareness of the responsibilities of particular individuals under fire-safety legislation is “not as perfect as it ought to be”, according to a specialist body, which has produced an advisory note in response.

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) says there is often confusion over who the ‘responsible person’ under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) is, and what they need to know in terms of ensuring that fire protection measures are correctly designed, specified, installed and maintained.

It has therefore drawn up an advisory note, which explains who is responsible, what they need to know, how they can ensure that fire protection is installed properly, who should carry out fire risk assessments, and where to find a suitable fire-risk assessor.
