The IOSH Railway Specialist Group (RSG) witnessed an impressive approach to safety and environmental issues during a recent visit to South West Trains’ Northam Depot in Southampton, which is operated by Siemens Transportation Systems (STS).
This state-of-the-art depot uses the latest technology for maintaining trains and also provides an excellent working environment. The ‘Pit Stop’ approach to maintenance reduces to the absolute minimum time spent on repairing failed parts — an approach which is a fundamental change for the industry.
