Parliamentary support

An Early Day Motion has been tabled supporting IOSH’s development, in partnership with the HSE, of a Workplace Hazard Awareness Course for young people.

Michael Clapham MP, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Occupational Safety and Health, tabled the early day motion in November, shortly after asking a question during Prime Minister’s questions (as reported in last month’s Interface).

The EDM states: “That this House is concerned to learn that over the last decade 14,500 teenagers were seriously injured at work and that ‘shockingly’ 66 died; welcomes the workplace hazard awareness course developed by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and the Health and Safety Executive for year 10 pupils; and calls on the Government to make it a mandatory part of every curriculum.”

Less than two months after being submitted, the EDM has already achieved 80 signatures, and has been sponsored by five other MPs: Angela Eagle, Nigel Evans, David Hamilton, Mark Hunter and Anthony D Wright.

Interface will keep you updated on the EDM’s progress over the coming months.
