New Year’s Honours for St John Holt and Sumner

A past president of IOSH has been awarded the OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. Allan St John Holt (pictured), head of health and safety at Royal Mail and president of IOSH in 1988-89, picked up the honour for his services to health and safety.

Allan, the author of ‘Principles of health and safety at work’, said: “This is a personal honour for me, but it is also a tribute to the work of thousands of British safety professionals. They have done a magnificent job of applying sensible safety in reducing the toll of deaths and injury at work, and play, over the past 30 years.”

Also receiving an OBE in the Queen’s Honours was IOSH member Steve Sumner, national health and safety policy adviser at the Local Government Employers, who received his honour for services to local government.

Steve said: “It is gratifying that my work has been recognised, but more importantly, it is recognition for health and safety as an issue and a profession. I work with many stakeholders and without this collaborative approach, I would not be effective, so this honour recognises their work too.”
