IOSH on the air

National Wiseup2work Day was 30 August, and IOSH spokespeople from across the UK were invited to talk about the campaign on regional radio and television.

The aim of the day was to drive attention to the Wiseup2work website (www.wiseup2work.co.uk) and get the media engaged with what IOSH is doing to help keep young people safe when they start work.

The day included a photo opportunity in London with IOSH president Neil Budworth, and Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC. The TUC gave its support to the Wiseup2work initiative, and accepted a copy of ‘Putting young workers first’, the six-point action plan that IOSH is taking to the party political conferences this year.

IOSH spokespeople spoke about Wiseup2work on 11 radio stations in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Yorkshire, London, Merseyside, Essex and the Midlands. As well as giving two radio interviews himself, Neil Budworth visited ITV Meridian studios in London for a lunchtime television interview.

Summing up the aims of the day, Neil said: “We want young people to go to the Wiseup2work website to find out what to expect before they start work. We want teachers to use the lesson plans and games with their students, and we want employers to make sure they are giving good inductions to their young staff.”

Ruth Doyle, IOSH director of communications, said: “It’s important to have a local voice for IOSH campaigns, and our success with regional radio shows just how effective our local volunteer spokespeople can be.”

IOSH would like to thank the following members for their time and efforts on the radio for National Wiseup2work Day:

– Tim Briggs, chair of IOSH Yorkshire branch;

– Neil Budworth, IOSH president;

– Geoff Jeavons, PR officer for IOSH Manchester branch;

– Richard Jones, IOSH director of technical affairs;

– Michael Sharkey, IOSH Northern Ireland branch;

– Andy Stark, IOSH trustee from The Adam Smith College in Fife
