IOSH 10 – Chief executive calls for tough debate

A challenging economic climate, an imminent general election, and hostile media coverage are all putting pressure on the health and safety profession to prove its worth – that was the message of IOSH chief executive Rob Strange OBE on Day Two of the IOSH 10 conference.

During his presentation and keynote interview with conference chair Gavin Esler, Rob urged health and safety professionals to challenge preconceptions, drive meaningful debate, and think hard about how they can help build a strong case for their profession as it squares up to tough economic conditions and negative press coverage.

In a review of the five years since IOSH created its first chartered member, Rob lauded the organisation’s commitment to lobbying, best practice and driving a positive news agenda. But there’s still a long way to go, he said, highlighting the importance of IOSH members in providing the commitment, mutual support and ideas to drive positive debate about health and safety.

Rob also discussed the criticisms levelled at IOSH by Lord Young when he opened the conference the day before, saying that IOSH has a constructive relationship with the Tory peer. “The fact that Lord Young said his door is open to lobbying from us is significant,” he said. “The way really is open now for us to take this debate forward.”

In response to audience questions, Rob said he was proud of IOSH’s commitment to competence among health and safety professionals – and, from a personal point of view, that chartered status was gained during his tenure as chief executive. “It has made a huge difference,” he said. “It has given us a real voice and put us firmly on the map.”
