International relations- Linking up with Slovakia and Romania
IOSH has continued to develop links with government figures and safety professionals in Eastern Europe.
New member of the Accession Countries Working Party Paul Popescu met with Akos Derzi, the secretary of state at the Romanian Ministry of Labour, Family and Equal Opportunities at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London. The pair discussed sharing information and IOSH participation in national events organised by the Ministry.
Mr Derzi also expressed a desire to learn from UK businesses’ experiences, drawing on IOSH’s technical expertise to reduce the incidence of accidents in mining, construction, agriculture, and manufacturing.
Paul, accompanied by IOSH’s international affairs officer, Laurence Dufour, also attended the 21st International Conference in the High Tatras in Slovakia in November. Laurence gave a presentation about the European Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organisation’s new European Certification standard, while Paul presented on IOSH’s risk management toolkit.
The pair met the Slovak Association for Safety and Health at Work and Fire Protection, and the Institute for Labour and Family Research at the Technical University of Kosice.
