Get on course for perfect training

Securing health and safety training that precisely matches the needs of your organisation can be challenging.

For example, take Debi Carter, senior training adviser from PETA Ltd, a private training provider on the south coast of England. One of its customers required a practical course to help people understand the implications of health and safety at work. The problem was current off-the-shelf packages were proving unsuitable, as they did not provide user-friendly course presentation and materials, to help people with specific learning needs understand the course content.

So Debi developed a ‘delegate friendly’ picture-based course, seeking accreditation for the course through IOSH’s course approvals team. Talking about her experience, Debi stated:

“This course allows people to process the information quickly. By using graphics and demonstrations, we’ve been able to come up with a course delivered in a way that explains to people with learning difficulties what, for instance, machine guarding does and why they shouldn’t remove it.

“If the course approvals team weren’t there, I wouldn’t have been able to get a course like this accredited by a professional body and the fact the delegates get an IOSH certificate at the end of the course gives it real credibility.

“The course has had some pleasing results. It’s been really well received, the delegates now have more confidence because they know something about health and safety, and some of them have even gone on to become health and safety representatives!”

Using the course approvals service allows trainers and employers to produce a course, using IOSH syllabuses based on national standards, tailored specifically to meet the requirements of a specific workplace. It’s a process Debi has gone through several times, in producing courses ranging from Managing Safely, through to training for work placement officers and she confirmed:

“I’ve always found the course approvals team very helpful. They ensure we have a quality product that’s fit for purpose and because clients tend to come back for more training when they want a refresher or are set to start a new venture, it’s been good for our business too.”
