Conference to explore construction’s economic woes

The challenges posed by the poor economic climate for the construction sector will be discussed at a major health and safety conference in Edinburgh.

InterConstruct 09 takes place on 19 and 20 May at the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa in the Scottish capital. Leading players from across the construction industry will be coming together to discuss the impact the recession is having on the sector, and to share health and safety best practice.
Topics to be considered over the two-days include health and safety culture, communicating with a multicultural workforce, occupational health, height safety, and adapting to international standards. Speakers at the event include:

  • James Skilling, HSE
  • Lawrence Waterman, Olympic Delivery Authority
  • Tim Fisher, American Society of Safety Engineers
  • Barney Green, Combisafe International
  • Shawqi Sajwani, Dubai Holdings
  • Eldeen Pozniak, Pozniak Safety Associates, Canada
  • Georgios Panopoulos, Management Force Group, Greece
  • Blaz Pecovnik, Kograd IGEM d.o.o.

John Lacey, the chairman of IOSH’s Construction Group, which is organising the conference, said: “The economic downturn is making life tough in the construction industry. But that still doesn’t give employers an excuse to get lax on health and safety. InterConstruct 09 will bring industry leaders from across the globe together to share innovative, cost-effective solutions.

“The conference will also explore the issues posed by multi-cultural workforces, which are increasingly prevalent in our industry and are a major challenge for us. But it’s also an area where we have a lot of best practice to share with ourselves and those in other industries. InterConstruct 09 will help us do this.”

Three parallel sessions, covering ‘communication’, ‘culture’ and ‘people’, will be running on both days. The event also features a welcome drinks reception on the evening of the 18 May and a gala dinner on 19 May.
