Inclusive PPE Charter

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential for keeping workers safe across a wide range of sectors. From manufacturing and construction to healthcare and the emergency services, PPE plays a fundamental role in ultimately protecting workers.

However, the effectiveness of PPE is reliant on how well it fits the individual. Ill-fitting PPE affects worker’s ability to do their job effectively, causing discomfort and potential injury.

SHP has learnt that ill-fitting PPE also impacts wearers psychologically, with some reporting it erodes confidence and can impact on career progression.

This issue can have detrimental effects on a wide range of people, including workers that wear religious headwear, and where PPE is not compatible with their body shape or size.

We are calling for united action to ensure that well-fitting PPE, that takes into account the user’s individual requirements and Protected Characteristics, is no longer seen as best practice, but the minimum standard for all.

Developed by SHP to spearhead change across the industry and to achieve a more inclusive workforce, the Protection for Everyone Charter asks for the following commitments:

  • To uphold the value that all workers deserve access to well-fitting PPE to work comfortably, with the understanding that the standard sizing of PPE is not a one-size fits all.

  • To proactively source suitable and correctly fitting PPE to meet the individual needs of any employees who require it, with the understanding that PPE may need to be sourced from more than one supplier.

  • To work with any individual employee that has concerns or issues with the PPE provided to allow us to provide a suitable and well-fitting alternative.

  • To provide inclusive PPE for all as part of our dedication to the health, safety and overall wellbeing of our employees.

  • To lead by example and share best practice with our contractors and suppliers.
