Grenfell inquiry blames governments and fire service
Introduction of a single construction regulator among report’s recommendations.
The Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people was a result of “dishonest” companies and a lack of strategy by the fire service, according to the final report of the six-year public inquiry.
The 1,700 page document reveals that management and regulation around high-rise building has been lacking since 1990. It cited the coalition and Tory Governments that ignored concerns around safety practices.
Among the report’s recommendations is a single construction regulator and changes to the way materials are fire tested.
Criminal charges
Police and prosecutors have said that investigators will need until the end of 2025 to complete their inquiry, with final decisions on potential criminal charges by the end of 2026.
Ruth Wilkinson, Head of Policy and Public Affairs says in light of a fire in East London, work is still needed. “We hope that the final report from the Grenfell Tower inquiry will give much-needed impetus to the crucial work to make buildings safer across the UK … The remedial work following Dame Judith Hackitt’s recommendations in 2018 has been far too slow; we are still plagued by unsafe buildings. This was clearly demonstrated by the fire in Dagenham on 26 August.”
