Air quality concern after Wimbledon fire
Fire at waste collection site in Wimbledon on 7 September exposes local residents to smoke.
It is reported that 6000 cubic metres of domestic waste caught alight at the single-storey building on Weir Road.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) attended the scene with 40 firefighters and six fire engines, taking over 72 hours to extinguish the blaze.
After a large amount of smoke was produced, residents were told to stay inside with windows closed, and both schools and nurseries were shut in the area due to air quality concerns.
LFB’s scientific advisor monitored air quality in the area, liaising with Wandsworth Council, Merton Council and the Environment Agency.
Schools reopened on 10 September, with Wandsworth council announcing that, after testing, air quality returned to ‘acceptable’ levels.
It is still unclear what caused the fire.
