Care home admits breaches after 92 year old dies following fire door crush

The owners of a care home and a firm of builders will be sentenced next month after admitting breaches during renovation work at the Alexian Brothers Care Centre, in Manchester, following the death of an elderly lady, crushed by a fire door.

92-year-old Irene Sharples, who suffered from dementia, was injured in the incident in 2010 and died four weeks later.

Healthcare Management Trust and builders Rothwell Robinson Ltd, of Worsley, admitted failing to ensure her safety at Trafford Magistrates’ Court.

They will be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court.

The incident took place during renovation work on 7 November at the home in St Mary’s Road in Moston, which is owned by the London-based care home firm.

A statement from Health Management Trust said: “Our thoughts continue to be with the family of Ms Irene Sharples.

“We have already taken steps to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.”
