Finalists announced for SHP Rising Star Award 2018

SHP is delighted to announce the finalists for 2018’s SHP Rising Star Award.

The annual award, open to anyone under the age of 30 and based in the UK, seeks to recognise the role that young people are playing in health & safety and acknowledge the rising stars within the new generation of health & safety professionals.

The list of finalists will be deliberated by a panel of experts, before the winner is chosen and announced at this month’s Safety & Health Expo.

Rising Star

Calum Brown HSQE Manager UK, ALE Heavylift

Calum challenged regional leadership within the organisation to improve health and safety and has worked with his regional management team to develop and refine systems regarding health & safety reporting culture. Calum took a culture where reporting was sporadic and lacking in detail due to issues like mistrust, lack of communication and training and poor access to systems, and within one year has raised the level of reporting by 450%, as well as improving the quality of reports. His hard work has created a sustainable reporting culture based on empowerment and engagement.

Adam Chambers Divisional Health and Safety Manager, McCarthy and Stone

Adam has produced procedures and training programmes for the benefit of trainees at the nationwide construction company, supporting trainees in and outside of his region. His work, says his nominator, has “drastically improved the company’s health and safety culture across the country”. His passion and enthusiasm has seen him promoted from Regional Safety Advisor to Divisional Safety Manager. Last year, Adam also raised funds for the company’s health and illness campaign through a charity bike race.

Charlotte Downs Interim Deputy Health & Safety Manager, University of Portsmouth

Charlotte has led a project to create and launch a new in-house online DSE safety training, as well as launching an online Fire Safety training course developed by a colleague. Charlotte liaised with course developers and ensured the content was verified by experts in the subject matter to enable launch across the university. Since joining the university in 2015 with no health & safety experience, Charlotte has completed her NEBOSH General Certificate, Fire and Safety certification and Diploma course, and has taken on management of the University’s National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health Centre.

Amber has applied the foundation of safety risk management in an innovative and effective manner for the ZSL’s overseas and UK projects. She breaks down health & safety myths to create a working environment where risk is properly appreciated and managed, growing ZSL’s network and sharing best practice. Her nominator said: “Amber is always mindful of our overseas cultures, personalities and the needs of our colleagues.” This included managing an incident in which four ZSL partners were trapped in their office for 36 hours under militant gunfire in Mozambique.

Louise Higgins Regional Safety Advisor, McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd

Louise has progressed through the company’s trainee development programme and has shown great enthusiasm in working to improve the safety culture in her region. Going above and beyond, Louise volunteers to assist with training and accident investigation as well as peer reviewing documents, contributes to forums and delivers first aid training, which is not a required part of her role. Louise has taken a determined approach to her professional development on own time, including completion of a NEBOSH Diploma and a level 6 NVQ.

In his own time Euan mentors others, assisting colleagues day or night. His nominator wrote: “Euan is working flat out encouraging young people to join the health and safety sector, changing and challenging perception. For such a young mind to have the forethought and vision for the future of a project and progression planning is amazing.”

Matthew Montague Regional Safety Advisor, McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd

Matthew has changed the safety culture in construction in McCarthy and Stone’s East Midlands Region by applying consistent standards, sometimes against difficult opposition. The new standards he has established have meant the region has gone from the company’s worst health and safety performers to one of its best. Matthew has volunteered to be the team lead for timber-frame construction, as well as lone working and has become the ‘go-to’ person for advice on these particular topics, delivering lone worker training nationally.

Her nominator noted that she goes above and beyond, regularly spending extra time with staff to ensure they understand what they need to do and encourage them to follow the correct processes.
