HSE Chair Martin Temple CBE to speak at Capita’s 25th annual lecture
The prestigious Capita Health and Safety Lecture, now in its 25th year, welcomes HSE Chair Martin Temple CBE, and GB tennis coach Leon Smith OBE among its speakers, with Gerard Forlin QC, Regulatory Barrister of the Year 2016, charing the event.
Over the last quarter of a century, the event’s previous speakers have included Sir John Cullen, Lord Woolf, the then Lord Chief Justice, Lawrence Waterman OBE, Professor Loftstedt and the Lord Dannatt, over almost three decades of change in the profession.
25 years of lectures
At the inaugural lecture in 1992, Sir John Cullen, Chairman, Health & Safety Commission, looked at constructing a safe future in Europe, still a poignant topic 25 years later. This was followed by talks on offshore safety, construction, CDM, combining safety, health and environment and, in more recent years, the future of deregulation.
In 2010 Judith Hackitt, past Chair of the HSE, lectured on how to determine what is really important and what is not, and at last year’s lecture Lawrence Waterman OBE led a fascinating discussion entitled Out of Site: Health, safety and wellbeing beyond the construction site boundary.
2016’s lecture
This year’s lecture, which will be held once more at The Royal College of Surgeons in London on 11 October, sees Martin Temple making his first public address since being appointed chair of HSE, and will be an opportunity to hear his views on the current health and safety landscape including what direction he plans to take the HSE in.
Martin became Chair of HSE in May 2016 following his independent triennial review of the HSE in 2014. He was previously also a board member of the Technology Catapult programme, and chaired a programme to clarify and streamline the nature of UK Government support to small businesses.
Also lecturing this year is top level tennis coach Leon Smith OBE, who led Great Britain to glory as captain in the 2015 Davis Cup, the first win for the British team in 79 years. He will compare elite sport with health and safety and offer his take on effective approaches to management.
Leon Smith has coached several Scottish junior players, including Andy Murray. He was appointed Head of Men’s Tennis simultaneously to his appointment as Davis Cup captain and also served as Head of Women’s Tennis between 2011 and 2013.
Leading this year’s lecture will be Gerard Forlin QC. Gerard was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2010 in both Civil and Criminal.
In the last five years he has been ranked in the leading independent directories including: Health and Safety, Product Liability, Crime, Public Inquiries and Inquests, Consumer Law and Environmental Law.
