Fifty years of the Health and Safety at Work Act
A collection of articles considering the Act’s impact.

An e-book from SHP and in association with NEBOSH.

Since it came into force almost 50 years ago, the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974 has had a profound effect on British industry.

Its implementation has overseen major reductions in work-related injury and the overall scale of ill health.

To commemorate half a century of one of the UK’s most important pieces of legislation, SHP has commissioned a collection of short essays from a range of voices from the profession, each asked to reflect on the Act’s impact and its future role.

Authors include Samantha Cartwright, Tim Marsh, Dom Cooper, Shaun Lundy, Anna Keen and contributions from IOSH, British Safety Council and RoSPA; as well as legal takes from Fieldfisher LLP and Erin Shoesmith at Addleshaw Goddard.

Learn how the legislation has made the world of work a much safer place while considering how the Act can reflect future challenges including wellbeing and technology.
