Throwback Thursday: tube safety
In the November 2009 issue of SHP, a construction segment looked at safety on the London Underground. Shane Tracey explained how Tube Lines, the company responsible for the day-to-day running and maintenance of three of the lines, met the safety challenge.
At the time, Tube Lines looked after 320km of track assets and 100 stations on the underground, covering Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. Tube Lines understood that improving safety and wellbeing on work sites can motivate staff and lead to greater productivity and efficiency.
In order to get everyone on board with the safety message, Tube Lines launched their ‘Road to Zero’ campaign, and they used any opportunity to draw attention to both good and bad safety behaviour. They hosted regular safety forums and workshops so people could learn from each others’ experiences.
In August 2009, Tube Lines achieved their goal of a year without a lost-time injury.
