One in four workers would lie about being ill tomorrow

A quarter of workers have admitted they will lie about being ill tomorrow to get a day off work, a new survey has revealed.

The poll of more than 2,000 workers by hot desk providers Desk.co.uk found 27% of those questioned said they would lie to try and get an extra day off on Friday, June 1.

But only 8% said they would lie about being ill to get a day off today (Thursday, 31 May).

Desk.co.uk has urged all employers to double check sick day excuses this week, which is half-term for many households around the country.

Temperatures are expected to rise as the weekend approaches.

“When it’s hot, kids are off and it’s a short week, people are more likely to lie to avoid a day in the hot office,” said Desk.co.uk’s Jane Smith.

“Some people will attempt to work from home, but some simply won’t turn in at all and make up a lie.

“The challenge is for employers to decide what is right and wrong,” adds Ms Smith. “Yes, they want their staff in work, but they don’t want an office full of sick people.

“In the new world of working from home, many are seeing this as they best option, but we all know what it’s like trying to working from home, especially when it’s hot.”

The hot desk provider has also suggested firms allow pets in the office, offer childcare and onsite creche facilities and desk beers to encourage people to stay in work on a Friday.
