‘Secure everyone’s safety’, construction campaign launched

An international campaign has been launched with the aim to promote safety in construction, and the industry itself.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme is looking for the construction industry to take to social media to promote a positive image of construction using the hashtag #loveconstruction.

As part of the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice, which is being promoted during the campaign, the industry is being encouraged to demonstrate that safety and health plays a huge and fundamental role in ensuring constructors attain the highest levels of safety performance.

Construction sites are being asked show images of a ‘professional industry’, with the aim of improving and raising standards. By having positive images on social media of safe and healthy environments, with a happy workforce, it is thought that the next generation of the workforce will be enticed into the industry.

Part of the Code of Considerate Practice includes:

  • Having systems that care for the safety of the public, visitors and the workforce;
  • Minimising security risks to neighbours;
  • Having initiatives for continuous safety improvement;
  • Embedding attitudes and behaviours that enhance safety performance.

Challenging perceptions

The campaign aims to improve perceptions of construction among the general public, particularly young people and potential recruits to our industry. It comes at a crucial time for the future of the construction workforce as over 400,000 new recruits are needed each year to deliver construction projects in the UK and Ireland.

It was officially launched at the Scheme’s ‘Image of Construction’ event held on 11 September at the technology venue CodeNode, London

Considerate Constructors Scheme Chief Executive Edward Hardy said: “Perceptions of the construction industry among the general public, particularly young people are now more than ever before formed by what they see and read on social media.

“While a number of organisations and individuals working across the industry are embracing the power of social media, there is a need for the entire industry to speak in one voice to promote a positive image of construction.”
