Are you responsible for health and safety at work in Scotland?
RoSPA’s annual Scotland Occupational Safety and Health Congress is returning to the Glasgow Hilton Hotel for a 21st year on 16 September 2015. This essential one-day event is aimed at anyone with responsibility for, or an interest in, health and safety, looking to keep on top of industry developments and keen to move away from simply complying to excellence.
Following the General Election, with the outcome of the Smith Commission report still unknown, and as multiple new health and safety laws are coming into force, the future of OSH regulation in Scotland remains uncertain and not being aware of new or changed legislation could mean you’re not even complying. It’s never been a more important time to know what’s going on. Don’t risk getting caught out.
This year’s event offers a variety of content, including a live re-enactment of an interview under caution delivered by Pinsent Masons LLP, to help you understand what can be expected in this situation, what your legal rights are, and the ramifications of what you say.
A critical session, delivered by legal expert Colin Bissett, Partner at DAC Beachcroft Scotland LLP, will focus on 14 new legislative changes coming into effect over the next 24 months that will significantly affect the way we manage occupational safety and health. Make sure you have all the information you need to adapt and to communicate to employees when you’re back in the workplace.
High-profile incidents like the Glasgow bin lorry accident currently in the news have raised questions about the way risks are managed in the waste and recycling industry, which accounts for 2.6 per cent of reported injuries to employees when only employing around 0.5 per cent of the British workforce. This session, to be delivered by Chris Jones, Chairman of the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) Forum, will look at WASTE 23, route assessment and other ways to reduce accidents that will be of interest to everyone, regardless of the sector you work in.
The congress, supported by Healthy Working Lives, will also provide key insights into the future of OSH regulation from the HSE, CIPD Scotland and RoSPA. Learn about mental illness at work and stress from the Scottish Association for Mental Health and See Me – Scotland’s programme to tackle mental health stigma and discrimination.
Learn about the benefits of maintaining a strong safety culture from RoSPA award winners Aramark – a global provider of food, facilities management and uniform services, who face an unusual set of challenges when delivering offshore operations but still manage to deliver high-quality results.
