BOHS Theatre: small change can lead to better protection

Chris KeenOccupational exposure to hazardous substances continues to lead to significant ill-health outcomes, according to Chris Keen, principal occupational hygienist at the Health and Safety Laboratory.

While some businesses invest considerable resources on exposure control measures, generally these fail to crack the problem.

Speaking in the BOHS Theatre at 2pm today, Mr Keen will argue that while expensive control hardware is often necessary, there are many situations where worker exposures can be reduced by making relatively simple and inexpensive changes to existing controls and working practices.

During the session, he will present case studies from the foundry, woodworking and electroplating industries to show how this can be done. Using real-life examples based on substitution, modifications to existing LEV systems and better worker training, the presentation will illustrate how significant improvements can be made at little cost.

Mr Keen will also discuss how exposure measurement can be used to stimulate improvements, illustrating the value that proper application of occupational hygiene can add to protecting workers.
