Standard Life announces contractor of the year
Building support services company Arthur McKay named winner of Contractor of the Year at a ceremony at Standard Life headquarters in Edinburgh
On Friday, Standard Life launched its first Contractor Awards to recognise health and safety performance in financial services, with a specific focus on our facilities and premises partners. It follows the introduction in early 2014 of the Standard Life Health and Safety Charter for Contractors, at the heart of which is a partnership commitment to work together to improve health and safety performance in financial services. Following a programme of contractor site audits designed to ensure risks to staff are adequately controlled during contractor works on our premises, Standard Life created this UK based award.
This year’s overall winner is Edinburgh-based Arthur McKay for delivering Standard Life’s chiller replacement programme. The company demonstrated the following key attributes:
- An open culture which fostered co-operation, communication and co-ordination
- A visible commitment to high health and safety standards
- Management visibility on site who were seen to lead by example
- Consistently providing site-specific documentation, identifying local hazards with the implementation of suitable risk-based controls
- Rigorous planning and testing of high-risk works
- Sustained high performance throughout the project
- Appropriate selection and continued monitoring of sub-contractors
Nicky Riding, Standard Life People Director (UK & Europe) and Executive Sponsor of the initiative, said: “In Standard Life we believe the management of health and safety is part of the success of any organisation and that is also indicative of the overall management capability of that organisation.
“To demonstrate this, in early 2014 we saw the introduction of the Standard Life Health and Safety Charter for Contractors, at the heart of which is a partnership commitment to work together to improve health and safety performance in financial services. The awards presented today are a natural progression of our commitment to our contractors.
“We believe these awards demonstrate our commitment to improving health and safety; shows that we are promoting good health and safety management within our supply chain; and recognises and rewards good contractor performance, setting standards for all contractors.
“We are absolutely delighted to give our inaugural Contractor of the Year award to Arthur McKay for their professionalism and commitment to the health and safety process. We also offer congratulations to all the other companies recognised today. We regularly work with contractors and are continually impressed by their responsibility for the safety of our staff and our business.”
Ian Smith, Operations Manager accepted the award on behalf of Arthur McKay. He said: “Arthur McKay are proud to accept the award of Health & Safety Contractor of the Year, in recognition of our consistent delivery of high standards of health and safety, whilst working in collaboration with our valued high profile client Standard Life”
