SHP AWARDS
SHP Trailblazer Awards
The Trailblazer Awards were launched in 2020 and recognise health and safety professionals who have made a positive difference through innovation.
The awards are free to enter and open to all in the UK, irrespective of level of seniority, age or industry. The award aims to celebrate true innovation in the profession which has been used to solve a problem and made a real difference in their environment.
Previous years in this category have seen sub-awards in workplace wellbeing, ESG, technology and positive social impact. This year we are looking for one overall winner – the Trailblazer 2024.
This year, as an exciting new addition, SHP will announce the winner of the award live at our partner show for leaders of people and property – Anticipate London (2-4 December).
The current holder of the 2023 Trailblazer award is Marcin Nazaruk, Founder of Psychology Applied. Marcin’s ‘Learning from Normal Work’ approach uses tools and techniques to help companies proactively identify accident precursors so they can reduce risks, minimise injuries and prevent costly mistakes. “Winning the Trailblazer Award last year was a truly humbling recognition that the HSE community sees the need to go beyond incident investigations and start learning from normal work to identify pre-cursors of accidents before they happen.” he told SHP.

What makes a Trailblazer?
If you’re looking to enter the SHP Trailblazer category, judges will be looking for an innovator: someone who has come up with a solution having identified an issue or problem within their workplace; they have developed ideas to solve that issue or problem and successfully implemented it into the workplace, communicating with stakeholders (such as managers) throughout the process. Judges would like to see demonstratable evidence in terms of statistics that show improvements in safety, efficiency/lost time incidents, cost savings, for example, or even short case studies.
Last year’s winner, Marcin, added: “My advice to those applying is simple: focus on the difference you’re making and be authentic in your approach.”
