dorsaVi Ltd’s workplace solution, ViSafe, has been awarded the top spot by the London Construction Awards at the London Build 2016 Expo. The company also won Innovation of the Year – Software.

The introduction of ViSafe’s wireless sensor technology, that tracks and measures how people move in real-time work situations,to the construction industry in the United Kingdom is part of the wave of cutting edge technology in the workplace, which is gaining momentum. SHP’s pioneering construction focus for November highlights innovation and excellence in the industry.

Since entering the UK construction market in July 2015 dorsaVi has worked with Vinci Construction on an equipment solution project where ‘Ecospot’ mortar boards were assessed. The dorsaVi sensors were able to confirm that the use of the Ecospot mortor boards resulted in an 84% reduction in low back muscle activity, and up to 70% reduction in high-risk movements. Additionally, the assessment showed there was the 17% increase in productivity (bricks laid per minute) when using the new adjustable mortar board versus the old way of doing things.

Skanska also used the dorsaVi sensors to monitor brick layers, scaffolders and labourers in an ‘exploratory’ study where the main aim was to identify the highest risk tasks over the course of a typical day or shift.

The results of these projects, and others like them, highlight opportunities to improve ways of working which often included equipment height and type, logistics of re-stocking, and optimal manual handling for scaffolding, fixtures and other construction equipment. With this data comes new insights, and what was ‘how we’ve always done it’ is opened wide and can be challenged with hard evidence.

Zoe Whyatt, Head of Sales and Operations, dorsaVi Europe, said: “We are delighted to be acknowledged for the health and safety innovation and benefits we are bringing to the construction industry. With a growing portfolio of ViSafe clients, we know that our customers value the insights we are able to deliver. Being selected as winners in these two categories, from more than 100 entrants in each category, further confirms that we have a solution that the market needs and values”.

Bill Hill, Chair of the judging committee and CEO of Lighthouse Construction Industry charity said: “dorsaVi’s solution stood out and really resonated with the judging committee. It’s great to see creative thinking and innovation in the area of health and safety for construction workers. This is something close to my heart as our charity sees the impact on injured construction workers and their families who are often thrown into poverty as a consequence of workplace injury.”
