Women in Health and Safety celebrates ten years

Women in Health and Safety (WIHS) celebrates its 10-year anniversary, having been launched and supported by SHP and Safety and Health Expo (now part of Anticipate London) in 2014. Here, we hear from the organisers of the event.

Celebrations start on Monday 2 December at Anticipate, where you are invited to join us for a drink in the Mixer Bar at 4pm and at any time during the show, join Heather Beach on stand – SHP2888 (Healthy Work Company) for a celebration selfie in our special 10 years of WIHS photo booth.

Over the last ten years we have seen the profession grow in terms of the impact and importance of its female participants.  Numbers of professionals now are at 30% rather than 20% and many of them hold senior positions in large organisations.

Supported by SHP and a committee from the industry and from selected sponsors, WIHS has:

  • Held more than 30 face to face large group events around the UK hosted by people such as Shirley Parsons, Mace, Visa and HSE Recruitment.
  • Facilitated a further 50 informal pub-based Safety Thirst events
  • Held numerous webinars on technical and so called “soft” skills including imposter syndrome
  • Facilitated a series of site visits – including London Underground sites, Crossrail and Royal Opera House
  • Created some very successful mentoring relationships (some of which have turned into employment relationships!)
  • Supported Presidents of IOSH in campaigns such as encouraging women to sit on IOSH committees and council and to become Fellows

At Anticipate London, get your free drink voucher from Heather Beach on her stand and join the other groups supporting women in adjacent professions – women in fire, security and facilities management for a drink at the mixer bar.

Women in Health and Safety is a free membership group which can be joined here .  The group, supported by SHP, provides networking events, education and mentorship for women in the profession and is run by Heather Beach.  To run an event or a Safety Thirst contact [email protected]
