SHOW PREVIEW
SHP’s guide to Anticipate London
Our sister-event Anticipate London begins today with plenty on show for the safety professional. Here we preview what’s on offer.
Regular attendees of the Safety and Health Expo (SHE) will notice it sitting under a new banner this year. A strategic repositioning by the event organiser Informa brings the show, alongside other legacy brands IFSEC, Facilties Show and Firex (previously the Protection and Management) series under a new umbrella – Anticipate London.
Its aim, it says on its homepage, is to bring “together leaders in property and people for a safer, smarter future”, and its in its keynote speaker line-up, that sits physically at least outside of the four shows that the pivot is evident. Technology, innovation and large-scale risk management are key overarching themes of the programme. Sir Alex Younger is a heavyweight name for any event, but by securing the Former Chief of MI6 as a keynote speaker, among other stellar names from security, technology and sustainability, Anticipate London is clearly offering something new to previous incarnations.
Despite its new parent branding Safety and Health Expo retains its form, an offering that combines a vast show floor of exhibitors covering software, training and of course PPE, complimented as ever by a robust and menu of practical and thought provoking content. From wellbeing to working at height; legislation to leadership, SHE’s varied speaker programme will appeal to all levels of the profession, but we’ve selected a few that are worth adding to your Expo diary.
Grenfell
To kick off the Monday, we recommend crossing show floors and heading to FIREX for a special panel debate analysing the Phase 2 report of the Grenfell Inquiry. The report, which came out in September, includes recommendations that are set to fundamentally change the UK’s approach to fire safety and this discussion, Chaired by IFE’s Dr. Paul Stollard, alongside Gill Kernick, Steve McGuirk and Adrian Mansbridge, will discuss what this approach might look like. The discussion starts at midday at the Firex Stage.
On the same day, Dee Arp’s session on leadership is worth making time for. NEBOSH’S Chief Quality Officer’s talk at 3pm at the Safety and Health Expo Stage will explore communication skills and how to connect with the CEO and other C-suite leaders.
Fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries continue to make headlines with incidents rising and continued ambiguity around legislation. As such, a panel debate on day two aims to bring clarity on the topic. Panellists include Matt Humby at FireChief, Pete Smithson at RSA Insurance and Pinsent Masons’ Laura White. The session starts at 11:10 again at the Safety and Health Expo Stage and it’s set to be well-attended debate so get there early to bag a seat.
If you do attend the above debate, then we suggest staying where you are for the next session. Ill-fitting PPE continues to be an issue for many and has sparked a number of campaigns pushing change. One of the main issues is a lack of awareness around procurement so this and other challenges will be discussed by panellists Dr. Debbie Janson, an academic who has just published a guide on the topic; Danny Clake, Engagement Director for England at CITB; Jo Minns who represents the PPE supplier RS, with the whole discussion expertly steered by chair Becky Ray.
We also suggest taking a stroll to is the Inclusive PPE Zone. Sponsored by RS Safety Solutions the area will showcase examples of what good-fitting PPE looks like with the aforementioned Dr.Debbie Janson on-hand to talk about the guide procuring inclusive PPE, and to also collect feedback on attitudes to the issue for a live academic study.
