Throwback Thursday: Rana Plaza collapse

In April 2013, a garment factory collapsed in Bangladesh, killing over 1,100 people. This week, authorities filed murder charges against the owner and dozens of other people for their role in the tragedy.

A year after the Rana Plaza building collapse, in May 2014, David Gold wrote an article for SHP magazine examining what steps could be taken to avoid anything similar happening again. A number of organisations were working to bring about change within the garment industry in Bangladesh, by inspection and compliance and the provision of fire protection equipment and training. However attitudes towards safety differed in the region, with some owners and managers unmotivated to make changes. A move towards a safety culture and responsible health and safety policies would be a step in the right direction.
