HSE to investigate after teenage construction worker is seriously injured on M8

An investigation is under way after an 18-year-old construction worker was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle while he was at work, on Tuesday 22 November.

The man sustained serious injuries whilst working at the M8 roadworks near to Carnbroe Road, Bellshill and is being treated at the intensive care unit within Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The Health and safety Executive (HSE) is investigating and the incident is being treated as an industrial accident.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Around 1100 hours on Tuesday 22nd November, police attended a report of an 18-year old man having sustained serious injuries whilst working at the M8 road works near to Carnbroe Road, Bellshill.

“Emergency services responded and the man was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

“The injured man is still within the intensive care unit after receiving treatment for serious injuries. His condition is critical but stable.

“The incident is being treated as an industrial accident and as such a full investigation will be undertaken by Health and Safety Executive.”

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “The contractor, Scottish Roads Partnership, has confirmed that an incident occurred on site yesterday morning at approximately 11:10am, when a road worker was struck by a construction vehicle near the Shawhead Junction.

“Emergency services were in attendance and the injured man was taken to hospital.

“A full investigation into the cause of the incident is now underway.”
