System aims to reduce cyclist and commercial vehicle accidents

A cyclist safety system designed to allow cyclists and drivers to manoeuvre safely complies with the requirements of Crossrail, whereby all contracted vehicles must be fitted with safety equipment to alert drivers of nearby cyclists, according to makers Sentinel Systems Ltd.

The company say that the Bike Hotspot safety system works with sensors that are fitted down the nearside of the vehicle, which link to a choice of alarm, including in-cab sounders, LED lights, and external speakers warning the cyclist to move away. Each system is configured to ensure that road signs and parked vehicles will not trigger it while ensuring detection of bicycles, according to Sentinel, adding that a CAN adapter ensures that the system is inoperative above 10mph. There is also a night-silent feature, they say.

Companies that have installed the system include Firow Ltd, who contract hire and spot rental municipal vehicles, and Boughton Engineering, a vehicle body-building company specialising in skip loaders and hook loaders, says Sentinel.

There is a factsheet about the Bike Hotspot safety system, available here.
