Guidance on static-electricity risks in flammable atmospheres

New guidance has been published on controlling the dangers of static electricity in the petroleum industry.

The Energy Institute (EI) has released a third edition the Model Code of Safe Practice — Part 21: Guidelines for the control of hazards arising from static electricity.

The updated guidance now includes information on:

• how to use the guidelines in the context of a risk assessment;
• earthing and bonding requirements for filling stations and aircraft fuelling;
• the influence of bio-components in fuels;
• selection of personal protective equipment;
• filling of intermediate bulk containers;
• the use of plastics for underground piping at filling stations and fuelling with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas;
• tank cleaning and meter proving;
• LPG and liquefied natural gas; and
• static electricity hazards and controls for upstream/offshore operations.

To support the new guidance the EI has also released a second edition of its DVD, Controlling the risk of static electricity, which can be used as a training tool by safety managers. According to the EI, the DVD explains fuels storage and handling principles in a practical, non-technical way in a way that is accessible to a range of employees.

Both the guide and the DVD are available to purchase from the EI website. The document is on sale for £165 and the DVD is priced at £249. If the items are purchased together a 25-per-cent discount is applicable.
