Feature preview: Become bully-proof

Aryanne Oade final_Page_1

In the July issue of SHP, Aryanne Oade examines workplace bullying and the impact it can have on health.

Incidents of bullying are on the increase across UK workplaces. SHE professionals are likely to be involved in responding to these incidents, so understanding the dynamics could play a role in how those affected by bullying recover from the experience.

Bullies often continue to bully because those targeted don’t know how to react to this behaviour, or even recognise it as bullying. Oade outlines the criteria that an incident should conform to in order to be considered bullying, along with examples to showcase them.

The article will also provide a strategy for countering the destructive behaviour of bullying, as there are behavioural skills that can be learned to alter the dynamic, skills that are needed at the moment of attack. These can help the victim regain their personal power and create consequences for the bully to deal with, rather than getting away with it.

This article will appear in the July issue, out at the beginning of the month.

What makes us susceptible to burnout?

In this episode  of the Safety & Health Podcast, ‘Burnout, stress and being human’, Heather Beach is joined by Stacy Thomson to discuss burnout, perfectionism and how to deal with burnout as an individual, as management and as an organisation.

We provide an insight on how to tackle burnout and why mental health is such a taboo subject, particularly in the workplace.
