Employee loses two fingers at silver manufacturer

An employee of Carrs of Sheffield (Manufacturing) Limited suffered damage to all four fingers on his right hand when it was pulled into an in-running nip. This resulted in his middle two fingers being subsequently amputated.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how, in May 2013, the employee was using a straightening machine for flattening coils of silver when his glove caught on a jagged edge of coil, dragging it into the in-running nip.

Carrs of Sheffield (Manufacturing) Limited was fined a total of £10,000, and ordered to pay £6,445 in costs after pleading guilty to an offence under Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
