Conference preview: showcasing the best the UK has to offer

2014-IFSEC-02717

SHE and IOSH 2015 co-locate at ExCeL London for a second year. Visitors to the UK’s flagship event for health and safety professionals can expect an unrivalled package that showcases industry thought leaders, trailblazers in training and product innovation and authoritative insights into policy, practice and legislation.

Safety and health’s pre-eminent UK conference and the industry’s largest exhibition will once again be flying the flag for UK and international professionals at ExCeL London from 16-18 June. The team spoke to over 1,000 visitors and exhibitors to find out exactly what they wanted from the event this year as well as look at the pain points from last year. The 2015 programme is undoubtedly the best ever.

With over 350 leading manufacturers and distributors exhibiting at Safety and Health Expo, many showcasing the latest in innovative products, together with professional insights from leading bodies, including IOSH, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the British Safety Industry Federation, the British Safety Council, the British Occupational Hygiene Society, Safety Groups UK and Access Industries Forum, this co-located event remains the one must-attend national show for the industry.

The theme for this year’s IOSH conference is ‘Leadership in action’ and kicking off this issue, SHP will be profiling key speakers in the coming months. At this year’s event, Safety and Health Expo will neatly dovetail with the conference, providing technical and soft skills content on the show floor as well as the largest platform in the UK for delegates to examine the latest in products and services designed to assist them in their front-line challenges.

DSC_3241With occupational health rising up the safety and health professionals’ agenda, this year’s Health and Safety Week will be centred on a call for action across the industry. Once again, the heavyweight associations have thrown their support behind this initiative, which runs from 15-19 June. On page 47, SHP interviews Neal Stone, acting CEO at the British Safety Council, who argues why the industry needs to do more.

With occupational health exposures responsible for over 99 per cent of workplace deaths, safety and health professionals can show their support by running their own health week or by attending the Health Symposium, which takes place on 18 June at Safety & Health Expo. Leading players will discuss the health issue in a panel debate and delegates will have the opportunity to take part in workshops and take away practical skills from the interactive discussions.

keynote speakers
Also as part of Health and Safety Week, there will be a ‘women in health and safety’ forum at Safety and Health Expo, which will be featured in a future issue of this magazine.

The successful SHP arena is this year being run by both IOSH and SHP. Hosted in a specially built keynote theatre, which will take 400 delegates, the theatre will also play host to three inspirational keynote speakers – Baroness Karren Brady, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Sir Chris Hoy. Outside of these speakers, the team has taken feedback from visitors and editorially curated a programme designed to meet their challenges in 30-minute sessions. These include, among other topics, the latest thinking on behavioural safety and CDM.

With innovation the defining theme running through the event, delegates would be advised to visit the British Safety Industry Federation’s Innovation Zone, which will include a demo theatre and pods, specifically reserved for those exhibitors with trailblazing products and services. In addition, the innovation trail will enable safety and health professionals to find exhibitors that are launching new products and services on the show floor.

Bringing the very best from the leading associations under one roof, this year’s event also provides a platform for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the British Safety Industry Federation to host their prestigious awards, both of which will be featured in forthcoming issues of SHP.

Adding weight to the policy discussions, the British Safety Council will be bringing its global risk management theatre to the show for the first time, while the British Occupational Hygiene Society returns again this year with its occupational health theatre, featuring many of the leading thinkers in the field.

Also back by popular demand is the Business Driver Safety Zone, which this year will be run with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, a well as the BSIA Lone Worker Pavilion, the IKAR Fall Arrest Demo and Safety & Health Live!

“Safety & Health Expo is the national event for safety and health professionals and it is imperative that this flagship event can deliver on the critical needs of those working within the sector. That is why we are bringing more innovation, more education and even more practical solutions to all under one roof for three days this summer,” says Heather Beach, OSH director.

“However, we also want to appeal to our visitors as human beings, and have invested more than ever in visitor experience this year, including our exciting celebrity sessions featuring Baroness Karren Brady, Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.”

In a further move to improve on last year, IOSH conference delegates will benefit from a personalised VIP meeting system for Safety & Health Expo, allowing the pre-booking of appointments with chosen suppliers on the show floor, helping to ensure that delegates can maximise their time. Some of the leading exhibitors this year are BM Polyco, Scott Safety, ACT Associates, Bureau Veritas, Deb, AA DriveTech, Draeger, Connexion2, Casella and British Red Cross, many of which will be featured in SHP in the run up to the event.

Protection & Management
Safety & Health Expo is being presented as part of UBM EMEA’s Protection & Management series, five major shows in related marketplaces covering safety and health, service management, facilities, security and fire. As well as serving the individual needs of each of the markets, the overall ethos of the series aims to protect and manage buildings and places of work, along with the people and information within those places of work.

The series encompasses IFSEC International, FIREX International, Facilities Show, Service Management Expo as well as Safety & Health Expo, attracting more than 40,000 attendees annually over the three days.

In 2014, the Protection & Management Series saw a 25 per cent increase in international visitors attending from 172 countries, highlighting the significant regard that the international community holds for this series.

Organisers of the event have secured discounted fares on hotels, trains and airfares for those visiting the event this year. Visit the Safety & Health Expo Travel Centre to discover how you can save money and make the most out of your time in London.
