Yorkshire firm secures government funding for staff training

21 February 2011

A community-regeneration company has sent all of its fleet drivers on a driver-safety course.

Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) Yorkshire has become the first Keepmoat business to send its workforce on the course. During the first phase of the programme, 108 staff completed an NVQ Level 2 in Carrying and Delivering Goods, and a further 94 are set to complete a driver apprenticeship.

Government funding helped finance the training programme, which is being provided by NDS Fleet. Skills covered included: how to drive more efficiently; forward planning for the journey ahead; observations; hazard analysis and recognition; bringing driving style up to date; and important vehicle checks.

FHM Yorkshire health, safety and quality manager, Nikki Parkin, revealed that the training has been well received by staff and she feels it will play an important part in improving driving techniques. She said: “Some of our drivers can travel up to 30,000 miles a year and their safety is paramount. This training has helped them gain new skills and a qualification, while improving safety, reducing fuel consumption and providing top tips on how to drive more efficiently.”

NDS fleet managing director, John Owens, added: “In familiar areas driving can become routine, which means that the driver doesn’t think about their driving. This could lead to accidents.

“The FHM employees have been willing and worked exceptionally hard on this NVQ, which reflects in the number of drivers who have successfully completed the course.”
