A county council has forced a village to take down a noticeboard, which it said was dangerous and contravened health and safety laws.

The Ely Weekly News reports that residents of Stuntney, near Ely, erected the new board to replace an old wooden one but were subsequently told by Cambridgeshire County Council to remove it because it was supported by only one post.

The council claimed it could be blown over by the wind, or a draught from passing vehicles, and thus contravened national guidelines, which, according to the council, stipulate that all roadside signs must have two posts to prevent them from being blown over.

A spokesperson from the local Ely City Council told the newspaper that board’s manufacturers had given the village an extra leg free of charge.
